Photographs of my latest work the Flying lizard and Seadog.

The Seadog is an underwater fantasy sea creature that combines sculptural and mechanical elements. The dog is a double headed creature with an intricate movable linked body.

The Flying Lizard was inspired by imagery depicting creatures of the deep sea and old fashioned mechanical toys. The Flying Lizard flaps its wings as it propels itself through an imaginary underwater world.

The sculptures were designed on computer and realised through 3D printing.

My work has been selected to be exhibited at the RAPID 2011 Contemporary Art Gallery!!

1st to 25th of May 2011 Exhibition at Grande Provence Gallery in Franschoek

The very talented french artist Paul Boulitreau has invited me to exhibit my sculptures alongside his brilliant paintings.

“The Gallery at Grande Provence is privileged to present an exhibition by the renowned artist, Paul Boulitreau. The title of the exhibition, ‘The Mute Opera’, is derived from the Italian name ‘Opera’ which means ‘total work’ and the silence of the studio. A selection of new and older works – paintings, sculpture and graphic works, that were made in South Africa in the last 5 years, will be presented” ….” The sculptures of Michaella Janse van Vuuren, explores the regions between Art and Science. She completed her formative school years at the Pretoria School of Art, Music and Ballet. After school her included interest in science led her to obtain a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2004. Since then Michaella has been exploring ways to combine her artistic and technical interests. The controversial new technology of 3-D printing, or additive manufacturing, proved the ideal tool to produce her digitally designed sculptures. Through her use of fascinating new technology, she exposes the endless possibilities of a new medium to the art world. Michaella raises questions regarding to the impact of these new technologies referring to mass customisation and automated algorithms.”
The exhibition will take place at the Grande provence Gallery in Franschhoek. The Horse Marionette and Rocking Springbuck and other favorites will be on display.

February 2010 The Goldfish pendant

In the spirit of the belle epoch, the pendant is in the shape of a fish swimming through a coral reef. It has been manufactured in yellow gold with gemstones set in the coral. The pendant is eye-catching and dramatic, a piece of nostalgia reminding the wearer of the precious resources of our oceans.
The Goldfish in coral pendant in 9kt yellow gold, colour differences were plated in Rhodium and 18kt gold. Set with green Peridot cabochon gemstones. The jewellery is designed using specialised 3d computer design programs. The gold objects are made by “growing” the physical object in wax using a Solidscape wax printer. The physical wax object is then cast in gold using a lost wax casting process.

The Chrysanthemum centrepiece wins Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at the Design Indaba 2009!

The Chrysanthemum centerpiece is a reversible design that can function as either a bowl or a candle holder, depending on which side of the design faces upwards.
The centrepiece reflects my passion for the textures, shapes and patterns found in nature. I especially like to interpret those objects that have a repetitive mathematically founded pattern. Some objects are immediately recognisable, such as the Chrysanthemum, others are more abstract. Direct 3-dimensional manufacturing methods, such as selective laser sintering (SLS) used to create the Chrysanthemum allows me to design intricate textures and objects. These textures and objects would have been impossible to execute by hand, yet the centrepiece still retains the beauty and tactile feeling of a natural object.

The Chrysanthemum is directly manufactured with the EOS P380 using the PA2200 polyamide material.
