Agents of the 3D Revolution
The Agents of the 3D Revolution was founded by Dr. Michaella Janse van Vuuren, Lionel T. Dean and curator Mariapaola McGurk. The Agents exhibited at the University of Johannesburg’s FADA gallery in 2013 and at the GUILD Collectable Design fair in 2014 . These events showcased the work of a number of artists and designers experimenting with 3D technology – including Joshua Harker, Keith Brown, Geoff Mann, Dr Lionel T. Dean, Michaella Janse van Vuuren, Jonathan Keep and Nervous System.
The Agents sought to educate and inspire the broader public about the possibilities and challenges presented by the developing medium, and the machines behind it. This they set out to achieve through a series of talks, seminars and workshops held over several days.
The Agents of the 3D Revolution are a collective of the most innovative international 3D print designers and artists, shaping new technology to serve their creative needs. 3D printing transcends the boundaries between design, the arts, sciences, architecture, technology, medicine and engineering. There are digital tools and techniques emerging in every avenue of creative endeavor, and digital technologies are part of our evolution. However, rather than merely enabling us to do what was done before, with greater efficiency, digital technologies offer revolutionary new modes of practice. Agents of the 3D Revolution share the philosophy that, to harness this potential, creatives need to explore beyond the confines of traditional disciplines, boundaries and training.
